Internet Access in Malaysia (2010)

This simple diagram shows all (or almost all) the possible solutions for your internet access requirement. Before I compare between these 3 choices, let me explain a few things first.

1. WiMAX is supposed to be both fixed and mobile wireless. But so far, WiMAX mobile wireless is almost non-existent in Malaysia due to expensive cost. I will explain more about WiMAX in the near future insya Allah.

2. WiFi alone doesn't offer internet access. WiFi is meant for enabling a wireless network. You need to combine something else like Streamyx with a WiFI router to enable WiFi WITH internet. Thus, WiFi's internet speed depends mainly on Streamyx, for example.

3. For now, wireless always loses to wired network due to the huge disadvantages in a non-wired medium.

Download Speed: (Best to Worst)
-Streamyx: 512 kbps to 4Mbps
-3.5G HSDPA: 3.6Mbps (average should be about 1800kbps or depending on area)
-WiMAX: 400kbps - 2.4Mbps (average is half speed or usually even less)
-3G: 384kbps (average 160+ kbps or depending on area)
-GPRS & EDGE (less than 20kbps, don't bother with these 'snails' unless if you must)

Wireless Coverage: (Best to Worst)
-GRPS & EDGE due to nation-wide 2G coverage
-3G
-3.5G HSDPA (not all 3G BTS is HSDPA enabled)
-WiMAX (still young state in Malaysia)
-WiFi (10 meters radius)

Quality of Service (Best to Worst)
-Wired
-WiMAX
-3G & 2G
